EDIRNE was the second capital after Bursa of the Ottoman Empire and is a gateway of Turkey opening to the Western world, the first stop-over for newcomers from Europe. ESKI CAMI (OLD MOSQUE): Built between 1402-14, it is very impressive with its fine white marble portal and decorative calligraphy on the interior walls and pillars; UCSEREFELI MOSQUE (1440-1447): The name of the mosque derived from the three balconies on the southeast minaret, each of the four minarets has a different architectural shape. ARASTA BAZAAR: Also a work of Sinan, this covered bazaar was finished in 1589; here you may buy specialities of the city, like soaps shaped like fruits or vegetables. SELIMIYE MOSQUE: Built between 1569 and 1575 by imperial architect Sinan, it is considered to be his masterpiece and one of the highest achievements of Islamic architecture in the world. Its broad dome is wider than Ayasofya in Istanbul! MERIC BRIDGE: Constructed at the junction of Meric and Arda rivers between 1842-1847. BEYAZIT KULLIYESI (Religious complex of Beyazid Mosque): You will find in this complex of buildings built between 1484 and 1488 and centered around the mosque a "darussifa" (hospital, medical center) remained in operation for four hundred years; this hospital was especially notable for its treatment methods for mental illnesses which included the use of musicotherapy, aromatherapy and water sound put into practice in the West only in the last years.
